Ntfyx, ntfy, Pushover and Bark: which fits your workflow?

Compare script notifications, phone replies, platforms and hosting. Includes Claude Remote Control, primary sources and Ntfyx’s current availability limits.

Updated

Start with the job you need done

#

For a general notification service, compare ntfy, Pushover and Bark. For encrypted notifications plus a signed answer that a local script or supported agent can consume once, consider Ntfyx. For continuing an entire Claude session from another device, evaluate Claude Remote Control.

Platforms and integration

#

First choose by the devices you use and whether you want to operate a server. A hosted service and a self-hosted installation have different operational costs.

ToolIntegration and receiversHosting / availability
NtfyxmacOS/Linux CLI, local MCP and supported agent hooks → iPhone and phone-authorized Web Inbox.Hosted service; no supported self-host package. CLI available; public iPhone release pending.
ntfyHTTP publish and subscriptions; Android, iOS and Web clients.Open-source server; hosted ntfy.sh or self-hosting.
PushoverHTTP API and existing integrations; Android, iOS and desktop browser clients.Hosted service.
BarkCustom push requests to an iPhone app.Open-source app and self-hostable server.
Claude Remote ControlContinue a local Claude session from the Claude app or browser.Requires eligible Claude sign-in and a running local process.

A button, a receipt and an approval have different meanings

#

A notification can be interactive without implementing the same execution contract. Check how your integration authenticates the response, binds it to the requested action, rejects expired answers and avoids duplicate effects.

ToolDocumented interactionWhat to check in your workflow
NtfyxAllow / Deny, choices and text; signed and encrypted answers bound to a request. The source verifies and claims before continuing. An Allow does not prove the external action completed. Retrying an uncertain action still needs application-level idempotency.
ntfyAction buttons can open links, send HTTP requests, copy text or send Android broadcasts.Action availability varies by client. Define authentication, request binding and retry behavior for your own HTTP action.
PushoverEmergency-priority notifications support acknowledgment receipts and callbacks.Acknowledgment confirms that receipt flow; define separately what an acknowledgment authorizes in your application.
BarkThe official project emphasizes custom iPhone notifications, grouping, sounds and encrypted push. The reviewed documentation does not establish Ntfyx-style signed decisions and one-time claims.
Claude Remote ControlRemote interaction with an existing local Claude session, including mobile notifications.Best evaluated as a session interface; Ntfyx’s additional sources include ordinary scripts and other agents.

Privacy is a separate decision

#

Ntfyx encrypts content at the sending endpoint for each receiver and signs the complete envelope. Its relay still sees routing IDs, timing, sizes and states. Bark also advertises encrypted push; encryption is not unique to Ntfyx. ntfy supports self-hosting, which lets you choose the server operator. For every product, evaluate the specific encryption mode, server access, endpoint trust and retention you configure.

HTTPS and self-hosting alone do not establish end-to-end content encryption.

Plans and limits

#

Check the current plan page before buying; prices, regional taxes and service limits can change. Self-hosting also requires your own infrastructure and maintenance.

ToolPayment model / limit to check
NtfyxOne active Topic free; Plus adds up to 20. Reference US prices: $0.99/month or $9.99 lifetime, pending App Store availability. Both plans share message and storage limits.
ntfyFree hosted use and paid hosted plans; self-hosting available. Check the plan’s quotas.
PushoverIndividual use has a trial and a one-time purchase per platform; Teams is a separate monthly offering. API limits apply.
BarkOfficial project describes the app as free; running your own server has an infrastructure cost.
Claude Remote ControlRequires an eligible Claude subscription. API keys and custom API endpoints are currently excluded.

Try the smallest useful workflow

#

If Ntfyx fits, start with a harmless notification and a Deny decision before attaching a real operation. You need a compatible iPhone build to pair. If you need an immediately available Android client or supported self-hosting, evaluate the alternatives above first.
